Report: Strahan to stay retired

Football Betting Lines

08/26/2008 - East Rutherford, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will reportedly remain retired, turning down an offer to come back and play for the Super Bowl champions.

According to a report on FoxSports.com on Tuesday, Strahan had no problems with the money offered to him, but he did not want to put his body through the rigors of a 15th NFL season.

The Giants contacted Strahan about possibly returning to play after defensive end Osi Umenyiora suffered a season-ending injury in Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets.

Strahan, who now works for FOX Sports as a studio analyst, retired in the offseason after helping the Giants upset the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

A six-time All-Pro who played the run as well as he played the pass, Strahan is the Giants' all-time sack king with 141 1/2 and the NFL's single-season sack king after recording 22 1/2 during the 2001 season.

The Texas Southern product was also named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection. He is only the third player to wear a Giant uniform for 15 seasons, joining Mel Hein (1931-45) and Phil Simms (1979-93).

Umenyiora will miss the entire 2008 season after suffering a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee during Saturday's 10-7 preseason loss to the New York Jets.

New York coach Tom Coughlin announced on Monday that Mathias Kiwanuka, who played strongside linebacker last season but missed the final six regular- season games and the playoffs with a broken leg, would take Umenyioras place at right end.

MySportsbook.com week 1 NFL lines

Now that the 2008 NFL schedule is finally out, it is only matter-of-course for lines on “Week 1” to follow.  Of course MySportsbook.com is the first to churn out odds for the NFL’s inaugural week for the upcoming season.   Expect a lot of fireworks the first Thursday night of the season as the defending champion Indianapolis Colts face off against the surprise of the 2008 season, the New Orleans Saints.  These teams were ranked #1 and #3 in the NFL respectively a season ago so a high scoring affair could be in order.  As of now, the Colts will be giving 6 points to the Saints; keep in mind the Saints were one of the better road teams last season going 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS.  The first Monday night of the season will again provide a “double feature”. Coming off a disappointing season, the Cincinnati Bengals will look to get back to playoffs and improve their public image as they take on the AFC North favorite Baltimore Ravens.  The second game features a couple of teams that haven’t had too much success recently but each could make some noise if the NFC is as weak as it was last year as the San Francisco 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. The most interesting game of the opening week will feature the NFC champion Bears as they hit the road to take on the NFL’s top team during last year’s regular season, the San Diego Chargers.
