Gordon wins pole at Texas for the first time

10/31/2008 - Ft. Worth, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jeff Gordon has yet to win at the Texas Motor Speedway, but Friday the four-time Cup champion finally captured his first pole here, taking the top starting spot for the Dickies 500. The No.24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet driver rounded the 1.5-mile, tri-oval in 28.652 seconds (188.469 m.p.h.).

The pole victory was Gordon's fourth of the season and the 67th of his Cup career. However, it was his first pole at Texas.

"I can't believe that we just got the pole for Texas," said Gordon, who is currently sixth in the Chase point standing. "It's a great start to the weekend, but it's only half of the battle. We'll see what happens tomorrow, getting it ready for the race (on Sunday)."

Gordon has 81 career victories, but has not won a race since October 2007 at Charlotte (38 races ago). His best finish in 15 starts at Texas is second, coming in 2002.

Homestead-Miami Speedway is the only other track on the current Sprint Cup schedule where Gordon has yet to win.

Dale Earnhardt Inc. driver Martin Truex, Jr. will share the front row with Gordon after posting the second fastest time of 28.723 seconds.

"The car was pretty good in qualifying but not perfect," Truex said. "I wish we could have got one more run in during practice. I think we could of got it just right."

Chase contender Clint Bowyer (28.745) and Jamie McMurray (28.745) will start on the second row.

The remainder of the "Chase" field will start in the following order: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (fifth), Matt Kenseth (sixth), Jimmie Johnson (seventh), Tony Stewart (eighth), Carl Edwards (16th), Denny Hamlin (17th), Greg Biffle (19th), Kevin Harvick (23rd), Kyle Busch (29th) and Jeff Burton (38th).

Brad Keselowski will make his first Sprint Cup Series start at Texas. Keselowski will start 37th in the No.25 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.

Joey Logano held on to grab the 43rd and last starting position in the No.02 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Tony Raines, Bryan Clauson, Chad McCumbee, Max Papis and Johnny Sauter failed to qualify.

Johnson holds a 183-point lead over Edwards with three races remaining in the season.

Even though Edwards picked up the victory, Johnson staged a remarkable comeback in last Sunday's race at Atlanta which helped him move closer to a record-tying third consecutive Cup championship.

Johnson was slapped with a penalty for speeding on pit road and fell one lap behind in 30th place as a result. But a gutsy call by crew chief Chad Knaus to pit late in the race helped Johnson cap off his turnaround.

During the final caution, Johnson pitted for four new tires, dropping him from seventh to 11th for the restart with just eight laps to go. The pit strategy paid off, as Johnson charged from 11th to second in the remaining laps.

Johnson is the defending race winner at Texas, while Edwards won here in the spring.

The green flag is scheduled to drop Sunday around 3:30 p.m. (et).

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
