07/24/2008 - West Hartford, CT (Golf Betting) - With more bad weather forecast for an already soggy U.S. Girls Junior Championship, officials decided Thursday to postpone the second round of match play.
Play will re-start at 7:00 a.m. (et) Friday morning with 16 matches on the schedule, followed by eight third-round matches.
The championship has been extended an extra day to Sunday, the first time that's happened in its 60-year history. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, with the 36-hole final pushed back until Sunday.
"We just went out and took a drive around the golf course and as expected, the golf course has now become unplayable," said United States Golf Association official Donna Mummert. "We do have a forecast of another one-to-two inches of rain this afternoon, so we are not going to be playing golf at all today."
But the USGA did allow one match to finish Thursday at a drenched Hartford Golf Club.
The first-round match between Julie Yang and Rachel Rohanna, suspended on Wednesday with one hole remaining following a long day of weather stoppages, resumed in the morning with the players all-square.
The match remained all-square through the 18th hole before the players were forced to leave the course again for a weather delay. They agreed to pick the match back up, and Yang went on to defeat Rohanna on the fourth playoff hole.
Thirteen-year-old Alexis Thompson was among the players who resigned themselves to a longer-than-scheduled weekend.
"I wanted to play a match, but you can't change the weather," she said. "It is what it is. I don't want to get struck by lightning. Tomorrow, hopefully the weather is good."
