08/24/2008 - East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will miss the entire 2008 season after injuring his left knee in Saturday's 10-7 preseason loss to the New York Jets.
Umenyiora had to be carted off the field in the second quarter of Saturday's setback, and an MRI on Sunday revealed a torn lateral meniscus. Opting against short-term rehab, New York decided to plan for the long-term and the pass- rusher will undergo surgery on Tuesday.
The procedure will keep New York's only Pro-Bowl selection from last season on the sidelines for the 2008 campaign.
Since being drafted in the second round (56th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft, Umenyiora has recorded 41 1/2 sacks. Last season he led the Giants with 13 sacks and added seven tackles in Big Blue's Cinderella postseason run.
The injury occurred with 10:48 left in the stanza following an incomplete pass by Brett Favre on third down.
Umenyiora started all 16 games last season for the Giants and earned his second Pro Bowl selection after totaling 52 tackles along with a team-high 13 sacks.
