02/23/2007 - Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Second-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero was among Thursday's round-robin winners, but the former world No. 1 Spaniard still failed to reach Friday's quarterfinals at the $445,000 Copa Telmex tennis event.
Ferrero blitzed Czech lucky-loser Lukas Dlouhy 6-3, 6-3 at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. Dlouhy replaced Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti (hip injury) in the draw.
The former French Open champion Ferrero, last week's Costa do Sauipe runner-up to Argentine Guillermo Canas, failed to win his three-man round-robin group this week. That honor went to Frenchman Nicolas Devilder, who upset Ferrero here on Wednesday.
Devilder will next face Argentine Diego Hartfield, who took out fellow countryman Sergio Roitman 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Fourth-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro booked a spot in the quarterfinals by beating Italian Stefano Galvani 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), while seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela landed in the round of eight by overcoming Russian Igor Andreev 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Almagro and Chela will square off here on Friday.
Spaniard Albert Montanes also reached the quarters, with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brazilian Flavio Saretta on Day 5 here.
Spaniard Carlos Moya, who beat Italian Filippo Volandri in last year's Buenos Aires, fell to Argentina's Juan Monaco, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0. Moya had also titled here in 2003 and was the runner-up in 2004.
In the quarters, Monaco will face Peruvian Luis Horna, who dropped his first set to Guillermo Canas of Argentina, but bounced back to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Canas had recently returned to the ATP following a doping suspension and was fresh off his title last week in Costa do Sauipe.
Argentine lucky-loser Carlos Berlocq posted a win by topping Italian Alessio Di Mauro 6-1, 6-4. Berlocq replaced his sixth-seeded Argentine Gaston Gaudio, the 2005 champion here, in the draw. Di Mauro, though, will survive to take on Montanes in the next round.
This week's tournament featured a 32-player round-robin draw, which consisted of a 16-player "play-off," with eight winners joining 16 other players to make up eight groups of three players. Each player then played two guaranteed matches in the round-robin stage. The winner from each group advanced to the knockout round (quarterfinals), where they will play out the event per a traditional single-elimination format.
The 2007 Copa Telmex winner will collect $66,450.
