Cards try to shuffle woes vs. Brewers at Busch

Baseball Betting Lines

08/26/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - If the Cardinals are unable to capture the National League wild card, their inability to defeat the Brewers this season may be to blame. St. Louis will try to halt a six-game losing streak to Milwaukee tonight in the opener of a quick two-game set at Busch Stadium, the final series between the two clubs this season.

Thanks to their skid versus the Brewers, the Cardinals have lost nine of 13 versus Milwaukee this year, going just 2-5 at home in the season series. It comes as no surprise that St. Louis trails the Brew Crew by 3 1/2 games in the wild card race.

The Brewers, though, have not turned their attention away from the National League Central title, as they trail the front-running Chicago Cubs by five games. Milwaukee has won four straight to avoid falling behind the Cubs in the race for the division.

That winning streak includes a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates that culminated with a 4-3 extra-inning win on Sunday. Guillermo Mota got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the 12th inning before J.J. Hardy won it in the bottom of the frame with a run-scoring single.

Mike Cameron finished the game 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBI and Bill Hall had three hits and a run scored for the Brewers, who got just six innings out of starter CC Sabathia. That tied his shortest outing as a Brewer since he was acquired from Cleveland in early July.

Ben Sheets goes tonight for Milwaukee, but he is just 1-5 with a 4.06 earned run average in eight starts since the Brewers traded for Sabathia. The right- handed Sheets faced the Astros on Tuesday and lost his second straight start, allowing five runs on five hits over six innings while striking out seven.

On the season, Sheets is 11-7 with a 3.16 ERA, though he does have a 2.91 ERA in 15 road starts. Lifetime versus the Cardinals, the 30-year-old is 5-14 with a 4.20 ERA in 25 starts, including two no-decisions against them this year.

The Cardinals hope they ride the hot bat of Albert Pujols to a victory tonight. Pujols went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 6-3 win over Atlanta, St. Louis' third win in four games.

Pujols, fresh off being named the NL Player of the Week on Monday, is hitting .563 (18-for-32) over an eight-game hitting streak with four homers, 10 RBI and six multi-hit games. His season average of .359 is tied with Atlanta's Chipper Jones for the major-league lead, and Pujols is hitting .382 (26-for-68) in his career versus Sheets with four homers and 11 RBI.

Todd Wellemeyer, just four days shy of his 30th birthday, draws the starting assignment for St. Louis tonight. He will try to win his fourth straight start and improve on his 11-4 season record and 3.79 ERA. The right-hander defeated Pittsburgh on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings of an 11-2 win.

Wellemeyer is 0-1 with a save and 5.85 ERA in nine games lifetime versus the Brewers. Two of those have been starts and both have come this year, with Wellemeyer getting a no-decision in each of them.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP

With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.

There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
